Well, I got it to not link against libstdc++2.8 FINALLY.  It is, as I
suspected, the evil 'libtool' again :-(  It was using the libsp that was
already in the system to generate its hardcoded dependency info.

After axing that problem, it still segfaults, but I had forgotten to
disable the -O2 optimiser (and deprecate it to -O), so I have to recompile
AGAIN now and see how it goes.  Let you know in about 30 mins :-)
