I had the same problem (and reported it at Fri, 9 Oct 1998 09:15:06 +0200
with subject 'Warning! Problem when upgrading to sysvinit_2.75-4.1').
I didn't really get any substantive replies then. I'd also guess that
this is alpha-specific, because we'd see many more reports if i386 also
had this problem.

Would you perhaps know what version sysvinit you upgraded from?

I managed to 'killall fsck' when it happened to me, so my filesystems
were saved. However, it then tried to start all the daemons etc, so
I hit ctrl-alt-del which worked.
