Naturally ...
I forgot to mention the most important thing with kernel-package.
In order to make it patch the kernel you have to set

> export PATCH_THE_KERNEL=YES


I had that hardcoded in my kernel-package and eventually forgot about it

  Hmm. Following these instructions didn't result in a patched 2.0.35
tree. Is there anything obvious I should be checking for?
