bash/libreadline, syslog, libg++

I've re-installed our 500 MHz Alpha. It doesn't seem to be
crashing immediately. A few notes:

* I now use kernel 2.1.60 and the de4x5 driver (instead of
tulip); it sometimes does not boot correctly, but I can live
with that

* syslogd causes exceptions, all the time, and makes
/var/log/messages grow with an alarming rate -- after a
couple of hours, it as almost 200 megabytes, with most of
zero bytes (i.e., binary junk, not text); I had to disable
syslogd for now, will investigate it later

* the base system installed bash 2.0-3 and libreadline2
2.1-2; I have newer packages from master, 2.01-5 and 2.1-7,
respectivel. However, these don't install, due to
dependencies and conflicts.

* I have libg++272_2.7.2.5-2.deb, but it doesn't install,
because it depends on libc6; should I override the
dependencies? Note that fakeroot depends on it, so I can't
install fakeroot, either.

Other than that, I'm not totally unhappy. :)

I haven't yet done anything with the system, so I don't know
if it will work, or if it will start crashing again. (I've
learned not to be optimistic about this machine.)
