Call me crazy, but shouldn't we make a suggestion to D. Becker to make
this definition change automatically if it's compiled on an Alpha?  A
simple #ifdef would probably do it (we use it enough everywhere else and
it works).

I'll patch it to work like that if someone will test it for me...
