YAMI4 in Debian?
Hello,
I have already contacted Ludovic with this request and he kindly
"redirected" me to this list. I therefore include my whole original mail
with some minor tweaks:
1 March was a release day for the 1.0.0 version of the YAMI4 project,
which is a messaging library for distributed systems. The announcement
was published on comp.lang.ada and I'm pretty sure you have seen it already.
The project home page is:
http://www.inspirel.com/yami4/
There is a significant content for Ada programmers in this project and
in fact the intent of this project is to compete with PolyORB in the
area of communication solutions for Ada.
I have tested this project on Debian to ensure that the compilation
process is smooth and painless and I strongly believe that it would be
beneficial, for all interested parties, to propose YAMI4 as a regular
package for Debian.
The YAMI project was started 9 years ago and I have personally
maintained it during all that time, while it earned its place in several
interesting scientific and industrial projects. The YAMI4 line marks a
new development effort and intentions for at least another decade. ;-)
Considering the above, I would like to kindly ask you to consider YAMI4,
the GPL-licensed version (which is available publicly), as a candidate
for a regular Debian package. Since I have a long-term intention to
maintain this project anyway, I will put the necessary effort to make it
fit in the existing policy with the only caveat that I would need a
thorough guidance on what has to be done.
An interesting issue is that YAMI4 is a multi-language project, which
currently supports Ada, C++ and Java - Python is a likely addition in
the nearest future. I have no idea what is a typical packaging solution
for such projects, but will happily discuss potential solutions.
In particular, partitioning the project into separate packages is
technically possible (if necessary).
Please let me know if the idea of including YAMI4 as a regular Debian
package sounds interesting to you, I will be happy to participate with
appropriate guidance from your side.
Regards,
