Re: Debian Newbie

Devin,

I would recommend getting the iso with non-free firmware.
https://cdimage.debian.org/images/unofficial/non-free/images-including-firmware/current/amd64/iso-cd/

Then go to https://debgen.simplylinux.ch/ generate a replacement sources.list file making sure you include the multimedia repository.

I'd also install smxi which you can download from http://smxi.org/smxi.zip

Install the command line tools and text browsers and utilities.

Debian still sticks to it's no "non free" rules, so firmware and multimedia aren't in their iso files.

Regards,

David

I think learning the Linux command line shell and utilities (if you
don't know them well already) is important. There are good books
available in reasonably accessible formats. While there are graphical
tools and applications as well, where Linux has its unique benefits is
at the command line and in the option to edit configuration files to set
up almost everything.

Thus, my advice to a new user would be to learn these text-based tools
progressively until you can use them efficiently.
