Thanks for the response.

I'm still sorting this, but it is clearly not an alsalib issue.

When running in a virtual machine things sometimes change without you being aware. I had thought that my virtual machine virtualized hardware settings had been the same between machines. Not the case. I'm spinning the knobs on a bunch of different parameters now and am making progress. Strange how a virtual machines virtual audio hardware buffer size will change on the fly.
