I don't think that's enough to disable it if PulseAudio is compiled (as it is
by default) to use ALSA/PortAudio only of PulseAudio is not available. You
might have to remove the Pulseaudio package completely to get the desired
effect.

I personally think it's better to work with PulseAudio rather than to remove
it if possible. It's going to become increasingly difficult to work without
PulseAudio on most desktop Linux systems.
