Did you check that the Serial Switch control panel is in "compatible"
mode, as per the Penguin docs?

Maybe the problem is my use of the kernel.org cross-compiler instead of my
usual cross-compiler. Do any of the past v4.1.y builds from sourceforge
still work on this Mac?

Did you boot MacOS with extensions disabled? An intermittent failure like
that is indicative of an unhandled interrupt.

Please add "earlyprintk" to your kernel arguments. This will produce
useful log messages which occur after "ABCFGHIJK", but which are lost if
there is a crash before any other console becomes ready.

Thanks. Log messages or a photo of the display are always useful.
