FYI: the patch has now gone upstream in any case:
<http://perl5.git.perl.org/perl.git/commit/4a278ec85c28bdfcfeffd327eb483181131afb8e>
so there's probably no benefit in working on removing this now.
Although if anyone has any strong feelings about it, do let us know.
