I think Christian is right, when I tried to start the installation of Etch on my A4000T I just had to decompress the kernel image but no other files.
I also checked the debug output of when I tried that and noticed that I also had "initrd overwritten", but on my machine it went into kernel panic because of buggy SCSI driver.
I used a daily build, it was the 7th of March.
