Regarding the project: either it's brittle, or it's just growing and
growing.  Now that big projects like X & GNOME release on a rapid
schedule, and the kernel has many point releases, is the workload
just increasing?

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
are mud people.
However, that "common sense" is obviously wrong.
