can't boot linux

i can't boot linux using my IIci.
i'm using the macinstall.tar.gz downloaded some days ago, tried both under
system 7.6 (on hard disk) and system 7.5.3 (floppy).
i tried both the included penguin19 and penguin17.

the problem is this:
often it simply won't boot saying that can't allocate enough ram (is 8MB
really too few?).
sometimes it instead tries to boot (booting linux, fasten your seat belts),
and appears a black screen with a cursor, but the hard disk then stops and
nothing happens...

what could i do?
