Probably not. Linux automagically generates a route table that works for
most network nodes (not for heavy-purpose routers, but that's a different
matter ;-)

Could you elaborate on that? Especially the part of that message with the
reason why it failed would be very useful.

If there's no /etc/resolv.conf (which is not *that* unlikely, seen that it
differs from machine to machine), then you need to create one. Mine looks
like this:

search dezevensprong.local
search debian.org
nameserver 195.130.132.20
nameserver 195.130.132.18
order hosts,bind

You can forget about the "search" lines (although they're pretty
interesting if you like to use "www" to reach your ISP's www server), and
of course you'll have to change the IP addresses to your ISP's DNS
servers...
