Most likely. I know of no specific cause myself (and I've used the HFS
filesystem a lot to test the SCSI driver with multiple disks) but I've
never created a new folder on the HFS disk, or copied anything to the root
folder directly. I have, however, heard about others having trouble in
such a situation. Reinstalling MacOS should bring your Mac back to life.
