I seem to remember having similar troubles installing gcc that went away
after installing cpp. (Andreas: It's not bundled with the gcc package, as
therefore it would also have to be bundled with the ecgs package, making
both of them bigger... install the cpp*.deb package and gcc should do
fine)
Something that threw me at first -- seeing "Depends" beside the links on
the Debian web page made me think "Do I need this package? That depends",
instead of "The package above depends on the packages below" - the latter
of which is correct. I probably wouldn't have considered that if I'd
visited debian.org via a graphical-browser, but Lynx is what the UNIX
accounts get- I have to sit in front of a Real Computer in order to use
Netscape...
