Have had (and having) similar problems on SE30. Fiddling with the boot settings as Michael suggested has helped me. Also, you might find that adding physical RAM might change things too. When going from 8 to 20 Mb I found I had to adjust the settings again just to get the machine to boot.

The SCSI driver needs work.

I have two drives installed: an Apple Quantum 80 Mb and a Connor 1.2 Gb. Can boot either.
 
Often, the Linux booter does not detect the Connor drive. But even when it does, the end result is the same. Here's the diagnostic output from the booter starting with the SCSI detection:
