FWIW I resolved the problem with Pon not working by reinstalling using the most recent 2.0.33pl1 kernel (dated 12/8/98) from the mac-linux ftp site. With this one the kerneld, insmod process works fine on my machine. BTW, I thought I had seen 2.034,35,36 kernels on this site.
