We're looking at a $450 board which is fragile enough that Debian
already owns a broken one and the supplier recommends N+2. Said boards
will be shipped back and forth around the world at least once per year
by external carriers.

The FPGA code of the board, which is not yet written, needs add-on
boards valued ~$100 for getting around the limitations of USB 2.0; but
said cards are not available in volume, purchasable world-round
quickly in a pinch, or with any kind of longer-term supply plan other
than "stock your own".

The cables needed to make the $550 construction work are not currently
available at all.

A purchase valued 18k€ in cameras alone is relying on this construct
for the foreseeable future.

The appeal of open hardware notwithstanding, the more I ponder this,
the less sense it's making to me; fiscally and technology-wise.
