[Debconf-team] [Jon 'maddog' Hall] Trip to NYC

Hi,

As you can see from the forwarded mail, maddog is up for giving a couple
of talks. Since this mail, he's grabbed flight reservations to avoid
the prices rising further, so I think he's decided he's coming.

So, he needs somewhere to stay for the nights of the 31st and the 1st.

He also wants to get on the DebianDay schedule to talk about Project
Caua, as well as being willing to give his player-piano talk (which is
very good, having seen it) and offering to try and get us to see the
linux driven organ at Trinity Church, Wall Street (although that's very
short notice).

I'd suggest that we accommodate him for free if at all possible. He's
probably stretching his finances with the flights as it is. As you can
see from his first comment, he's allowing his heart to rule his head.

Cheers, Phil.

Well, part of it is finances....hell, it all is...both needing money to
travel and time to work to generate money.

But what I would like to do is travel to NYC on July 31st, stay
overnight, present at DebDay the next day, August 1st, stay overnight
again and attend the first day of DebConf the next day to pick up
preliminary comments. Hopefully I would have enough Debian people at
the presentation to give me good feedback.

So I could get a room for the night of July 31st, then give my talk on
DebDay, then stay the night of August 1st, attend DebConf Monday the 2nd
and fly home Monday night. Any work I can do on July 31st and August
1st I can do from DebCamp/DebConf anyway, and maybe more.

I just looked at the prices for the rooms at DebConf and I could afford
to pay for two nights at Columbia University in the 'single' rooms, so I
don't think I need any "sponsorship". I would still feel guilty taking
it from some other member of the Debian community.

My suggested talk for DebDay would be:

Title: Project Caua: Private Sector, Environmentally Friendly Jobs with
Free Software
Time: One hour
Abstract: Project Caua is an Open project to create millions of private
sector, environmentally friendly jobs in urban areas of Latin America
utilizing FOSS, with implications of creating hundreds of thousands of
jobs in North America and millions more around the world.

In addition, Project Caua will open an avenue for free (as in beer)
wireless Internet to help defeat the digital divide, and to provide
low-cost training to get even more people off unemployment and create
taxpayers.

The specifications for Project Caua can be found at www.projectcaua.org.
While Project Caua is distribution neutral, Debian would be a natural
choice as the underlying distribution and sample implementation. This
talk will outline Project Caua and hopefully open the discussion for
actual implementation details.

I could additionally give a "fun talk" of why Linux is like a player
piano, with a lead-in into the Opus I organ at Trinity Church at Wall
Street, driven by 11 Linux PCs (10 plus a hot stand-by). If people
wanted we could all go down to the church and see the organ. They have
services open to all on Sunday from 1115 to 1230, but you can also pick
up the webcasts at any time....and I might be able to arrange a private
showing even at this late date.

What do you think? I will pay my way to DebDay and one day of DebConf,
but could you help me get the "Caua" talk onto the DebDay schedule?
