Ok, I fully agree with you on this one. It's a bit frustrating to try to explain what Debconf is about to potential sponsors (or potentially interested people) having only previous editions' websites to point to. A good central point is very important. Good thing you came to this conclusion, it only took us seven years! ;-) > The content for this is easy to create, and later easy to extend, more > important is the actual design and maybe a logo. > (...) > That gets us to the second point - a logo for this site. Every DebConf > itself has its own logo, so there we dont have a problem. But what to do > with this site? Completly without a logo looks bad. Following the DebConf6 Best Practices and Uses Nonexisting Manual, I'd suggest not doing it ourselves (or not limiting to doing it ourselves), and ask professional designers for ideas. Yes, it can be a 'logo contest' (although I'd go for a 'complete design contest'). Of course, I'm thinking of Pixelgirl as a quite probable participant in this contest. Or on the other hand, we could just appoint her to do this (if she wants, of course - She was our DC6 designer, but don't know if she wishes to retain the position). Remember that democracy and public opinions/decisions are good until they suck, and then they suck big time.
