Public transport is very efficient and cheap in the entire Helsinki area,
though you will need the slightly more expensive metropolitan area tickets
(seutulippu) to move between Espoo (HUT) and Helsinki (the adjoining cities
that form the capital area with the cities of Vantaa and Kauniainen).
For foreigners it is advisable to get a multiday pass for transport if you
plan on travelling arround the area a bit more. These travel passes are
valid on all local busses and -trains, Helsinki tubes and the Suomenlinna
ferry (an historical castle island that used to protect the sea route to
Helsinki harbor, http://www.suomenlinna.fi/). This is the canonical picnic
place with loads of tunnels to explore if you have a flashlight with you.
Citybikes (http://www.hel.fi/hkl/suomi/05%5Fpalvelut/kaupunkipyora/, maps
where to find these, unfortunately in Finnish) are available in the centre
of Helsinki for free (a 2 euro coin is needed to release the bike from the
cyclerack, but you get it back when you return the bike to any of the
citybike cycleracks), but you are not allowed to take them out of the centre
area, to Espoo for example.
I think there is some sort of canoo rental (http://www.bearwater.fi/) across
the road from HUT/Otaniemi in Keilaniemi and the Espoo city's boatline takes
you for a nice tour around the Espoo archipelago and you can jump off the
boat on some islands to have a picnic and take a later boat back to the
Otaniemi peer (right behind the sports centre, maps, prices and schedule
http://www.espoo.fi/xsl_perussivu_alasivuilla.asp?path=1;641;2523;3687;4312
unfortunately in Finnish again), but I don't know about bike rentals in the
Espoo area.
