This is indeed the solution for CD media.
(Normally it should suffice not to use
 option -sao.)

But why that ?
Whether the disc gets closed or not is not related
to the demand of CD SAO to see the session size in
advance (in order to generate and send the CUE sheet).

To be exacting:
There is one media type and state which will insist
in knowing the size in advance: DVD-RW after fast
blanking. It can only be written Disc-At-Once.
