The users, the Linux people, me, and who else
tried to find out what's wrong with those systems.

But for what ? Make me smarter.
I do not know a single incident where root privileges
made the difference between working and not working
if access permissions to /dev/sgN resp. /dev/srM
were granted.
If you need to get outmost process priority -
ok, then you need to be superuser. I don't think this
belongs _inside_ the burn program.
Whatever:
The problem in this thread has multiply been verified
to appear for the superuser as well.
It is either a bug in Linux or a peculiarity of
the drive-controller combination which we do not
know yet but which is known to Microsoft or Nero AG.
In any case we should try to help exploring.
Known facts:
It only happens with newer Linux and SATA drives.
Many newer Linuxes with SATA drives work without problems.
There seem to be SATA controller hardware issues involved.
> The OP did not send any cdrecord SCSI trace.
The state of the exploration is that sending
any mode pages 05h fails. Just believe me, for once.
I still hope to find somebody who is willing to
pick up the thread so we can continue trying to find
the reason. (We = experimenter + me + evtl. helpers)
Have a nice day :)
