The Linux security bug was that a novice programmer did allow to send
SCSI commands via an fd that has been opened read only!
The adequate bug fix would have been to require opening RW again.
Only to get your complaints about users being unable to do this and
that, change read speed and so on?
Besides that, the O_RDWR is insufficient to change device settings
(firmware, mode pages) and so on, so we can hardly assume that change
alone had made you happy.
And for a while users could burn one session but not use the -msinfo
option to get the sizes for the next session. There were problems, and
although I never have heard back on my reports, the problem does seem
to have gone away. I don't mind at all needing root to load firmware,
I'm just happy not to need that other operating system ;-)
