growisofs + Plextor PX-716UF requires fully blanked DVD-RW
I have a Plextor PX-716UF external DVD burner connected to
a Compaq C840 laptop via Firewire. (The USB ports on this
computer are slow.) I'm using FreeBSD RELENG_5 that has been
cvsuped in the last week.
I cannot get growisofs to burn DVD-RWs with this setup unless
the media has been fully blanked first. It won't even burn
fresh-out-of-the-box DVD-RWs. The version I'm using is
dvd+rw-tools-5.21.4.10.8.
On the other hand, cdrecord-ProDVD has no problems with the
same drive and media. The precise version I'm using is
Cdrecord-ProDVD-Clone 2.01b29 (i386-unknown-freebsd5.1).
I can also use Roxio Easy Media Creator with this system if I
boot Windows XP instead.
Here's what happens when I use growisofs to write
(unsuccessfully) to a fast-blanked DVD-RW:
