ISO-9660 is definitely not a backup format.
As I did already write before: star creates archives in an enhanced
standard format. You will be able to restore at least the same
amount of file meta data as with ISO-9660 + RR when "only" using any
other standard compliant archiver to restore star's backups.
If you like to automatically restore _all_ meta data and if you like
to do a fully automated incremental restore, you would however need
star.
P.S.: which recent OS does not come with star?
