dvd+rw-tools update [5.20, DVD+R DL]
dvd+rw-tools 5.20.x are available for download at usual location,
http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/. Biggest news are DVD+R
Double Layer support:-) Other news are BTC firmware flash utility
(contributed by David Huang), dvd+rw-booktype support extended to
Lite-On [and derivatives], as well as improved DVD-RAM support.
As for DVD+R DL support, there are two issues worth mentioning.
Layer Break positioning in -dvd-video recordings. This version provides
only rudimentary support for physical Layer Break positioning.
Essentially the only usage I'm "ready to discuss" at this point is
*image* copying of DVD-Video dual-layer media. Idea is to preserve
original physical Layer Break in order to ensure smooth playback of the
copy. This can be achieved by replacing N in newly introduced
-use-the-force-luke=break:N growisofs option with "Legacy lead-out"
value from dvd+rw-mediainfo output for *original* media. Without
specifying Layer Break position as depicted above the -dvd-video/-compat
recording will be "folded" exactly in the middle. No Layer Break
positioning is implemented for multi-session recordings.
"BookType" issue. Double Layer media prices make it hard to tolerate
incompatibility with legacy DVD-ROM/-Video units/players caused by few
bits in lead-in. I therefore would recommend to brand at least
-dvd-video/-compat recordings as DVD-ROM whenever possible/applicable.
There are units which support "BookType" manipulation functionality, HP
and Lite-On to name those who offer DL recorders. Note that *original*
Sony DRU-700 firmware apparently supported this, but the functionality
was stripped in currently available VY05.
