growisofs, LG GSA-4082B, DVD+RW : SK=4h/ASC=A0h/ACQ=80h
Being proud owner of a LG GSA-4082B DVD writer since a few hours,
i experience some problems.
Is there a kind of troubleshooting FAQ for growisofs which i failed to find ?
What does it mean when i get this message from a single evil DVD+RW media :
:-[ WRITE@LBA=26770h failed with SK=4h/ASC=A0h/ACQ=80h]: Input/output error
In at least half of the tries the system stalled completely and needed
the Reset button.
Is there a connection to my observation that writing speed varies much
even with successful burning ?
Details :
I use three new DVD+RW media out of the same box and get three very
different results :
#1 : writes at speed about 2x . Result verifies ok.
Media can be rewritten without problems.
#2 : fails after 300 MB
322306048/3946780672 ( 8.2%) @2.2x, remaining 17:14
322666496/3946780672 ( 8.2%) @0.1x, remaining 17:47
:-[ WRITE@LBA=26770h failed with SK=4h/ASC=A0h/ACQ=80h]: Input/output error
builtin_dd: 157552*2KB out @ average 2.4x1385KBps
:-( write failed: Input/output error
/dev/sr0: flushing cache
:-[ FLUSH CACHE failed with SK=4h/ASC=09h/ACQ=01h]: Input/output error
Now the whole system hangs.
I pressed the eject button of the DVD burner. Ten minutes later the
media got ejected. System still hanging.
I waited an hour and then had to press the reset button of the computer.
Sometimes the end is more graceful: growisofs ends with an exit value of 0 .
First i believed that DMA and/or growisofs version had an influence but
now i think that the particular media just gets more and more evil.
I found "4 09 01" in http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/keys.txt
and got quite scared : "TRACKING SERVO FAILURE".
But the error is reproducible only with this media, so the drive would be ok ?
#3 : writes at speed about 4x . Result verifies ok.
Media can be rewritten without problems.
Both media which do not fail show intermediate states of slowliness
while getting written (regardless of DMA) :
1573978112/4700372992 (33.5%) @3.2x, remaining 11:59
1574961152/4700372992 (33.5%) @0.2x, remaining 12:04
1574993920/4700372992 (33.5%) @0.0x, remaining 12:10
1581416448/4700372992 (33.6%) @1.4x, remaining 12:13
1595932672/4700372992 (34.0%) @3.1x, remaining 12:09
I found this : http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2004/03/msg00126.html
where Andi says : "... check kernel log ...". Well, my /var/log/messages
shows no trace of the slowdown. Just much complaints about DVD #2 (see below).
More details :
growisofs :
dvd+rw-tools-5.19-1.4.9.7 , downloaded 13 June 2004
and also
growisofs 5.12 from SuSE
used like this :
... | growisofs -use-the-force-luke -dvd-compat \
-Z /dev/sr0=/proc/self/fd/0
System :
Linux ts4 2.4.21-215-athlon #1 Tue Apr 27 00:53:38 UTC 2004 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
Freshly installed SuSE. Therefore i am not 100% sure wether really no
automounter is active. But at least DVDs and CDs in ISO format do not mount
automatically.
DVD writer (via ide-scsi as /dev/sr0) :
DVD+-RW+-R LG GSA-4082B
which promises to burn everything (DVD+,DVD-,DVD-RAM) and gets detected
by dvd+rw-mediainfo with the ill media inserted as :

There has been a problem report about Fujis in march but i believe
it is not related to the effects which i do experience.
