At what speed do you burn the audio CDs? With 2.4 kernels you can't use
DMA while burning CDs with sector sizes != 2048. So perhaps the buffer
underrun protection is kicking in all the time and it gets too much for
the drive/media? You could try at 10-16x. That's about as fast as it
can get without DMA.
