Package: xterm
Version: 4.1.0-2

The behaviour of xterm WRT the behaviour of the bold attribute seems
to have changed between 4.0.3 and 4.1.0.

My guess is that the previous version's default was to use
overstriking with bold rather than attempting to find a matching bold
font.

The following font aliases exist in the xfonts-base package:

  8x13 -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--13-120-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1
  7x14bold -misc-fixed-bold-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-70-iso8859-1
  8x13bold -misc-fixed-bold-r-normal--13-120-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1

When using the 8x13 font, the bold font selection is done with the
following pattern (I compiled xterm with --enable-trace):

  -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--13-120-75-75-c-*-iso8859-1

which matches 7x14bold. This looks fairly awful, and has some issues
with redraws.

To illustrate the redrawing, invoke an xterm as:

    xterm -bg grey5 -fg grey95 -fn 8x13 -fb 7x13bold

then within that terminal run:

    echo -e '\033[1;33;41mtest text\033[0m'

After an expose event, there are gaps (vertical lines) between the
characters.

It is of course possible to explicitly set "boldFont: 8x13bold",
although I've used:

    XTerm.vt100.font: 8x13
    XTerm.vt100.boldFont: 8x13
    XTerm.vt100.boldMode: true

which appears to me to be what the previous version was doing and looks
a little better with this particular font.

Regards,
