You probably meant "XFree86 -version", not "XFree86 -v".

Otherwise, the error is exactly as described.  There is already a server
running on display number 0.

Start the server with a different number (see Xserver(1x)), kill the
existing X server on display number 0, or if it is already dead, remove
the indicated lock file.
