Unless you have time to burn, the most pragmatic approach likely is to
assign the task to an old machine running IPCop (which appears to be
the GPL heir to GPL SmoothWall).
SmoothWall (and now, IPCop) exists for only one purpose, namely, that
of interfacing the LAN (which is ethernet) to the DSL or POTS line.
SmoothWall is the work of Brits; IPCop is a branch by Germans. I
haven't looked at SmoothWall lately, but the documentation for IPCop
is thorough and up-to-date, the forums are active, and the
configuration is simple.
