The debian-installer CD for i386 is currently using the kernel from linux-image-2.6.32-5-486. You can download that package and mount/extract the ISO and compare files. ./boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-486 from the package should match install.i386/vmlinuz from the ISO. The debian-installer image is automatically generated from current packages, not a custom kernel build, probably to alleviate the very concern you were talking about. -- Liam
