Problems with NX Server

I'm testing the NoMachine server and client on a pair of Debian Sarge
machines. After installing the eval keys and setting up a user, I try to
log into the NX server, and get the following:

Info: Proxy running in client mode with pid '6974'.
Info: Waiting for connection from any host on port '33074'.
Info: Accepted connection from '127.0.0.1' on port '33077'.
Info: Connection with remote proxy established.
Error: Remote NX proxy closed the connection.
Error: Please check your authorization credentials.

I'm not sure what's going on, since I have the user and password set in
/usr/NX/etc/users and /usr/NX/etc/passwords, respectively. The log shows
these errors:

[Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: Received line from nxssh process [NX> 710 Session status: running ] with code [710]
    [Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: Received line from nxssh process [NX> 105 ] with code [105]
[Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: Received line from nxssh process [Bye ] with code [-1]
    [Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: Received line from nxssh process [NX> 999 Bye ] with code [999]

[Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: XSetSelectionOwner with time elapsed [0]
[Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: Called the destructor for process [nxproxy]
[Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: Going to start the NX proxy process.
[Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: SpawnProcess method has returned [1]
[Mon Apr 25 16:36:28 2005]: Process [nxproxy] running with pid [0x1b3e]
    [Mon Apr 25 16:36:36 2005]: Received SIGCHILD
    [Mon Apr 25 16:36:36 2005]: Received SIGCHILD
[Mon Apr 25 16:36:36 2005]: Try to stop the process [nxproxy] with pid [0x1b3e]
[Mon Apr 25 16:40:26 2005]: Try to stop the process [nxssh] with pid [0x1b3d]
[Mon Apr 25 16:40:26 2005]: Try to stop the process [nxproxy] with pid [0x1b3e]

which pretty much say the same thing: the remote proxy is denying my
connection for some reason. Any ideas how to debug this further?
