I now have the same problem after a dist-upgrade this weekend.  I had
this problem several weeks ago, and fixed it by copying the .config
file from Ubuntu and compiling a kernel with it.  That fixed it until
this latest dist-upgrade (and I'm still using the same kernel).  It
really is annoying.
