I get similar messages as seen below, except it actually says "sda1" in
my case. Yours says "sdb" but not which one. I bet if you do trial and
error for sdb1, sdb2 etc and do mount commands one might work.

Beyond that I'm trying to get the hal/udev thing working that that I
don't have to know the device name. I'm close but not there yet. I'm not
sure if the extra message I get is do to something I have installed that
you don't, or my kernel version 2.6.9.

Well, I've figured out how to mount it manually so I can access the
pictures on the camera. However... 1) I was really hoping that it would
be automatically mounted as soon as I turned on the camera... 2) It
seems to be assigned a different device each time. One time it will be
sda1. Another, it might be sdb1. Still another, it might be sdc1. I have
to be missing something!

Now you've almost caught up with me. Have a look at the thread "Re: usb device (hotplug etc)". There was a fellow started to help me but now I haven't heard back recently.

I'm helping you to pay back him or whoever else ends up helping me, if you know what I mean. :-)

I believe the apt-get command below includes the packages that one needs to make this automated. Note that it will drag in and/or updated other packages as well. You can run the command to see what it wants to install and then just say "n" for now. I've actually installed these packages on my home machine but there still seems to be something missing (see the other thread for details). As an example, the output below shows the result on my office machine where I haven't yet installed any of these packages (but I'm just about to).

apt-get install -d -u udev ifrename usbutils hal pmount gnome-volume-manager gnome-media gthumb hal-device-manager gphoto2 libglib2.0-data
