So, apparently we're seeing the device. Unfortunately, I can't figure
out how to access it! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I get similar messages as seen below, except it actually says "sda1" in my case. Yours says "sdb" but not which one. I bet if you do trial and error for sdb1, sdb2 etc and do mount commands one might work.

Beyond that I'm trying to get the hal/udev thing working that that I don't have to know the device name. I'm close but not there yet. I'm not sure if the extra message I get is do to something I have installed that you don't, or my kernel version 2.6.9.
