If you are sure that the correct module is being loaded for your
hardware, you may like to try installing (or dpkg-reconfigure) the
package etherconf, which give you a friendly frontend to configuring
your network. It populates all the important files (such as
/etc/network/interfaces and /etc/hosts etc.). Very useful:
apt-get install etherconf
or
dpkg-reconfigure etherconf
