With Gnome, and so this means with Nautilus, i think the icons of
mounted drives appear on the desktop if they are present in your
/etc/fstab with sensible names.


Could you explain what you mean by "sensible names"? If there is something to this, then maybe I need to change the names I give. e.g. the USB memory stick is /dev/hs-jd-usb and mounted on /media/usbstick.
