There are 2 main (actually 3) buffers in X where it stores stuff you
select and cut and paste. One of these gets used by apps when you do
ctrl+c or ctrl+x in a gnome app for instance. (and possibly in emacs
when killing?) And the other gets filled as soon as you select
something. [1]

So to make a long story short, select the text with your mouse, go
over to the other app, press the middle mouse button.
