Xlib: connection to ":?.?" refused by server

Hi all,

Any idea what causes this message? :
Xlib: connection to ":2.0" refused by server
Xlib: Maximum number of clients reached
Unable to open display

I have googled and found very little on the subject.
I found some info in this thread :
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/debian-user-200312/thrd9.html#06539

which suggests that this is controlled by a ulimit or a limit in the
xserver itself. (changing these have no effect) OR : A broken app.

I've narrowed down the suspect apps to a single one :
xscreensaver

xlsclients, lsof, ps afx and /proc/ didn't help at all. So my
problem is that I need to now restart x every time after
xscreensaver ran for an hour or more. I really like xscreensaver,
and would like to keep it if possible. Could it be the nvidia driver.
How do I narrow this down further.

INFO :
OS = SID - Linux version 2.6.0-test9 (root@svb) (gcc version 3.3.2 (Debian)) #2 SMP
Graphics Card : RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro

Oh, I just noticed , I get this in dmesg :

in_atomic():1, irqs_disabled():0
