Why don't you install the system with any kernel that works, then
apt-get install kernel-source<whatever>, and build your own
later-version kernel? The Debian Way is to use make-kpkg, look in the
docs on www.debian.org for more info...
Perhaps your laptop needs some specific workaround enabled in the
kernel config?
