No reference really, but I can explain it to you right now: 'dselect
update' runs 'apt-get update' and then updates /var/lib/dpkg/available,
which keeps dpkg's idea of available packages up to date for things like
'dpkg --print-avail'. It's clearly a superset of what 'apt-get update'
does so there's every reason to use it instead.

See /usr/lib/dpkg/methods/apt/update, which implements 'dselect update'
for the apt access method.
