gcc-3.x doesn't work on kernel - was: Re: Odd problem compiling new kernel

I just compiled a 2.4.20 kernel yesterday:

$ls -l /usr/bin/gcc
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            7 May 18 12:44 /usr/bin/gcc -> gcc-3.2

$uname -srvm
Linux 2.4.20 #1 Tue May 20 23:40:59 PDT 2003 i686

What am I missing?  Or did I just misunderstand what you said?
Perhaps it's only some parts of the kernel that have trouble?  (And I
was lucky I don't need those parts.)
