Recompiling the kernel with SCSI disk support was the key.
I identified the mount point by installing sg3-utils and running sg_map
as per
http://vic.dyndns.org/linux-UsbMassStorage/
It was /dev/sda1. Teach me to minimise the size of my kernel!
