I found this by:
(1) Writing "hello world", and observing that gcc failed on this too.
(2) Separately compiling and linking; 'ld hello.o -lc' gets the same
failure.
(3) Using 'dpkg -S /usr/bin/ld' to discover what package ld belongs
to.
(4) Visiting http://bugs.debian.org/binutils to look at the bug list.
Had there not already been a bug, I would have reported one using
reportbug.
