cdrecord scsi timeouts

For the past several weeks, I have been having problems with cdrecord
and SCSI timeouts. I start to burn a CD-R, either using xcdroast or
simply cdrecord, and it gives me errors as such:

cdrecord: Input/output error. write_g1: scsi sendcmd: no error
CDB: 2A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 1F 00
status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION)

Sense Code: 0x09 Qual 0x00 (track following error) Fru 0x0
Sense flags: Blk 0 (not valid)
cmd finished after 14.368s timeout 40s

Sense Bytes: 70 00 00 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
write track data: error after 0 bytes
cdrecord: Input/output error. close track/session: scsi sendcmd: no
error
Writing time: 19.402s
CDB: 5B 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
Average write speed 244.0x.
status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION)

I googled for a fix, and the only thing I was able to find was to turn
off swapping, which I tried. It worked for a while, bu then, it
gradually even that stopped working. I used to be able to burn the
mini-CDs (the 186MB jobs), but that too has stopped working, and now it
seems to have stopped working altogether. I am running current versions
of xcdroast and cdrecord from sid, 2.0+a07-1 and 0.98+0alpha13-2
respectively, having just done a dist-upgrade last night, but this has
been occurring with alarming regularity over the past 2 or 3 upgrades.

System specs are a 1GHz Athlon, Asus A7V133 MoBo, 768MB RAM, 2*30GB
Maxtor HD (hda and hdc), 30GB Quantum HD (hdb), 120GB WD HD (hdd),
LG CED-8120 CD-RW drive (hde) and Samsung SD-616T DVD drive (hdg)

Anybody got any pointers on getting this working? The movies to burn are
starting to pile up...:)

Thanks,
