Newbie compiliing question
I'm about to install 3.0, but before doing so would like to understand one
issue properly.
There are a few applications where I have always compiled and installed
the latest version, taken directly from the developer's website.
I understand that it is preferable to keep everything as Debian packages,
rather than just getting the source and doing configure, make, and make
install, as I have been doing on my Mandrake system.
I've been looking at
http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-pkg_basics.html
6.14 says:-
"You will need all of foo_*.dsc, foo_*.tar.gz and foo_*.diff.gz to compile
the source"
However, all I've ever had in the past is foo_*.tar.gz. That is usually
all there is.
So, my question is: how are these other files created, and what happens if
I have foo_*.tar.bz2 ?
Thanks,
-Richard.
